Hurdling the Language Barriers

While all students have to master academic language, English Language Learners are also simultaneously being hit with a barrage of English in general. It is not usual to call a child's home and realize that they speak much better English than their parents. Helping pay the bills and finding stability can be tiresome chores for these children especially if they are not born here in the U.S.
Limited comprehension of English hurts ELLs and makes grasping academic content very difficult. Not knowing vocabulary limits these students in several ways:

- The ability to recognize when to use that word
- Knowledge of its multiple meanings
- The ability to decode and spell that word
