Introduction:
How to become a better science & math teacher? How could I incorporate literacy & project based learning across the curriculum? These were my primary concerns when returning to Temple University's College of Education for the E=mc2 program. But getting the opportunity to work with wonderful children like Julee Ly and Kelley Kongkham during student teaching at Grover Washington, Jr. Middle School helped me see that English Language Learners for who and what they are. The children of blended cultures reflect the best of America's "melting pot" and opportunity to revitalize the nation when their talent pool is given equal access to resources to promote STEM and college readiness. |
My ELL Case Study:
I build relationships with my students as a platform to share values, a standard of excellence, to discover what motivates them, and to discern what they need help with. There is a huge time commitment required that also means I have had to attend school dances, plays, basketball games, and museum trips to get to know the students I work with. It is of the utmost significance that I demonstrate care for them as much as for content taught. More than using short phrases, visual representations, the Universal Design for Learning or differentiated instructions, the power of connections made with these 8th graders provided in roads needed to more effectively engage learners. The comic book - describing the rock cycle - despite "not being their best work or worthy for anyone's portfolio" - really demonstrates just how much ELLs are capable of when effort is put forth to relate content to their interests.
